Everything I love about street photography is encapsulated in this single, lucky image. New York City is both urban and urbane, a sleepless, shifting mélange of mystery and outré coolness. Blink and you might miss something wondrous. (The shots immediately before and after this one are taken split seconds apart, and yet neither one is anything to write home about. That is, unless you enjoy pictures of billowing clouds of steam.)
What I also love about photography as a whole is summed up in "Mister Mister," the idea of isolating and preserving a single instant in time. As big and bustling as New York City is, there will never be another moment quite like this one again. Indeed, the passing of time is as nebulous and insubstantial as steam, changing before our eyes, obscuring the path before and behind us.
